CHANCE OF THE DEAD - an Interactive Night Shift

Created for the MAGS competition- MAGS July 2011, themed "A Second Chance". It's my very first stab at a MAGS game, but the
theme was right up my alley, because to me it read "make a game about a cute zombie cheerleader". So I did.

The Story
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Five years after her death, Janet Burdie is granted a night out. Ted, a friendly agent of the Powers That Be, allows her to have another go
at her most urgent, unfinished business: Submitting her favourite cake to the famous "C3" baking competition.
But unfinished business is, like, totally deep, and this teenage zombie may find there's even more to this very special night shift.

Running the game
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unzip the downloaded archive to a directory of your choice, then run chance.exe. There's a separate winsetup.exe where you can change
the screen resolution and switch between windowed or fullscreen mode.

In the title menu, press "New Game" to- surprisingly- start a new game. If a saved game is available, you can load it right from the title
screen, too, so you won't have to start things all over.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Playing the game:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You control Janet, a teenage zombie, and to win the game you must bake your signature cake. Use your mouse to click on the action
verbs at the bottom GUI, then click on something in the game screen to create short commands like "look at shelf" or "get cookies".

You can play the game with your mouse alone:
- LMB selects an action and performs it on an object
- RMB deselects an action and return you to "walk to- mode", which is used to move Janet around
- If you already are in "walk to- mode", you can use RMB for a quick "look at"

"Look" allows you to examine an object, and Janet will eagerly provide supportive comments.
"Get" allows you to pick up objects of a reasonable size, so that Janet can use them whenever or whereever she wants.
"Use" makes Janet "do the most sensible thing with an object", like flipping a switch, opening a door or pulling a rope.
"Talk" is for those rare occasions where the undead indeed speak to the living. See below.
"Bite" is for those common occasions where the undead attempt to feed on the living. Just try it out.

Janet can pick up items and store them in her "inventory"- once they are there, you can USE them to attach them to the mouse cursor, and
then use them "on something else". This almost metaphysical concept allows you, for example, to click on a door with a key attached to the
cursor, thus locking it to keep the mob out.
If you can't find a use for an active inventory item, RMB will deselect it.
Since combining inventory is a very frequent action, an item will not be deselected as long as you used it on another inventory item- only
clicks in the game screen will "reset" the cursor.

Janet can also chat with almost anyone of a certain IQ. In this case, a list of dialog options will appear, and you're free to chat away. There's
usually a "Good-bye" option in a dialog, so that you can quit it.

For keyboard fans, the following hotkeys are available:
L - look at
G - Get
U - Use
T - Talk to
B - Bite

If you want to skip over speech (text displayed above a character's head), just press any key, or click your LMB.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saving and Loading
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can save your game at any time by clicking the friendly "Save" button in the bottom GUI. Likewise, you can return to an earlier saved
game by pressing "Load". " Clicking "Exit" will close the game- make sure to save before you leave!
You can only save to one "slot", thus loading will always bring you to the last time you happened to click on "Save". There are no dead
ends in COTD, though, since you already have died: There is no way to reach a point where you can't win the game.
